Marine Engineering company for 20 years
What sets Stella Watermakers apart from any other is the decade of marine engineering experience that predated the first design concept. After many years of experience operating, servicing, selling, and installing all brands and types of watermakers, the team at Stella knew we could build a machine that required less servicing, was simple to operate, and was guaranteed to work when you needed it to.
Since 2011 Stella has been building the best small desalination systems for both marine and land using only high-quality pumps with great warranty reputations, constructed of 316 stainless steel and duplex, no use of proprietary parts, and no unnecessary electronics.
Stella Watermakers combines simplicity with quality components to create a reliable, easy-to-use system that offers real value for money. Whether you are a seasoned superyacht engineer or cruising yachty our modular watermakers are designed for easy installation, operation, and maintenance.
A detailed explanation of our Gen 3 marine watermaker system is below.
The Generation 3 Stella Watermaker
Gen 3 is a modular watermaker system (separate components, not a large framed box) so they can be fitted wherever there is available space (pictured) and use no electronics, just simple manual control valves.
All Stella Watermakers come standard with
1 x Control Panel, 1 x GP motor and high-pressure pump (unless engine drive, see below), 1 x Davey Low-Pressure Pump, Filmtec membranes (1,2 or 3) and housings, 1 x 20 micron and 5-micron pleated filters, 2 x seawater filter housings, 1 x carbon filter, and housing, standard high-pressure hoses and a TDS reader (Everything pictured).
* Autoflush is an optional extra, not everyone wants it though it is the only piece of automation we would recommend here.
Stella Manufactures AC or Engine Driven Watermakers
Electric 240VAC
The watermakers for larger powerboats, yachts, and catamarans with a suitable sized AC Genset. Always the first option, easy installation and makes lots of water fast. You will need a minimum 3.5kva (continuously rated) Genset to run our 240VAC electric unit. Output is 80, 160, or 210 litres per hour of water using 1, 2, or 3 standard membranes. Power usage (LP and HP pump) is approx. 12amps when running (without start-up load). For more info download the 240VAC manual at the bottom of this page.
Engine Driven
For all marine vessels without a Genset, but with an inboard engine. It’s a very efficient and reliable way of making plenty of water very quickly. You will need a suitable engine with room to fit an engine bracket and pulley system. We have some standard brackets available or custom fabrication is required. Output is 80, 160, or 240 litres per hour of water using 1, 2, or 3 standard membranes. Power usage is approx. 2HP draw from the engine. For more info download the engine drive manual at the bottom of this page.
Stella Options
Auto Flush
Makes it easier to maintain your watermaker if you are not making water or on the boat every week to perform a manual flush. All watermaker membranes need to be freshwater flushed after each use and then every 7 days if not pickled for storage to avoid damage to the membrane. Our auto-flush system includes a box with a dual timer and solenoid valve to flush your system with water from your boat’s tank for a few minutes every 7 days.
Spares Kit
All the consumables you need for 6-12 months cruising (depending on usage). Includes: 3x 20-micron seawater filters, 3x 5-micron seawater filters, 1x 5-micron charcoal (carbon) filter, 1x 500g pickling solution (for membrane storage), 1x 1lt HP pump oil.
Stella Advantages
Simple manual operation, no electronics
We have made it simple to use. You don’t have to study the manual to be able to operate our watermakers. We have removed the electronic automation which usually makes watermakers difficult to use, unreliable, and even harder to fix. Just two valves on the control panel and a knob to wind up the pressure. Comes with a laminated “Quick Start-Up Sheet“ with step-by-step instructions so anyone can make water quickly.
Super performance and reliability
Our watermakers make a lot of water fast! 80-240 liters per hour with our AC and engine-driven units. When it comes to making water ”the quicker the better” so you don’t have to do it every day or for long periods. With simplicity and quality components with a lack of electronics comes unequaled reliability, critical when cruising.
Quality 316 stainless steel components
From our high-pressure pump to our membrane housing end caps and fittings, all-metal components are 316-grade stainless steel (or Duplex), designed for a harsh marine environment. We appreciate quality and have sourced the best components from around the world for our watermakers. This combination of quality components and a simple design creates a very reliable, easy-to-use system.
Low maintenance and running costs
A simpler, better-engineered watermaker with fewer components means less maintenance is required. Running costs are minimal, and will depend on how often it’s used and how well it’s maintained. Consumables such as membranes, filters, pickling solution, and pump oil are all standard items available from us or worldwide.
Modular design for easy installation
Gen 3 Watermakers are modular (separate components not a large framed box) so can be fitted wherever there is available space. The Control Panel can be mounted with other components or remotely in a bathroom cabinet or cockpit locker.
80-240 litres of water per hour (expandable)
Our AC and engine-driven units make lots of water very quickly. Our standard high-pressure pumps will run up to 3 membranes, so If your water requirements change you can always just add another membrane to increase water production.
No flashing lights or failing circuit boards
Fully automated watermakers use a multitude of electronics including a microprocessor, circuit boards, solenoid valves, timers, relays, pressure switches, led screens, flashing lights, and salinity probes. Great when they work, but the cost goes up and reliability goes down! Any experienced cruiser knows that the simpler the equipment the better. Even seasoned superyacht engineers prefer our watermakers to others with all the bells and whistles.
No high maintenance energy recovery pumps
We don’t use complicated energy recovery pumps with lots of o-rings and poppet valves that create more maintenance. We use industry-standard 316 stainless steel triplex high-pressure pumps with solid ceramic plungers, designed specifically for marine desalination. Parts and service for these pumps are available worldwide.
No cracking plastic membrane end plugs
We don’t use plastic membrane housing end caps; they have a habit of cracking causing dangerous high-pressure leaks. We use quality Duplex 2205 stainless steel end caps for high strength and corrosion resistance.
High-Quality High-pressure hoses
We don’t use cheap and nasty high-pressure hoses; they chafe easily from pump or engine vibration and can split or burst causing injury and damage. We use the highest quality hoses we can find with Quality 316 Stainless fittings. The hoses are protected with an anti-wear wrap to help protect and prolong the life of the hoses.
No proprietary components
We don’t use special Stella manufactured components such as filters or membranes that force you to buy replacements from us and cost “an arm and a leg“. We use industry-standard components that you can easily find worldwide. If you are in a remote area we can ship parts fast if required or help you find them locally.
Best after sales service and backup
We are not just a sales company; we design and manufacture our watermakers so can offer the best service and backup. We have a marine engineering division who services all brands of watermakers and can help with all troubleshooting queries.
Installation and servicing if required
We don’t just sell the equipment, we also offer a complete installation, commissioning and maintenance service via our marine engineering division if required. Our 30-page Installation & Operation Manual supplied with each watermaker provides simple step by step instructions with diagrams of all components making installation easy for the DIY boat owner, boat builder or contracted installer. The manual includes an easy-to-understand system flow diagram and detailed procedures for operation and maintenance of your watermaker.
24 months limited Australian warranty
We offer a 24-month limited warranty on our watermakers. This is an Australian warranty, backed up direct by us the manufacturer. You won’t have to deal with a different country or through a local agent.
Proudly designed and manufactured in Australia
Not only is our water maker the best value for money system available, it is also Australian-made and comes with an Australian warranty and back-up. Support your local marine industry and buy an Australian-made watermaker.
